On-Line Business Tip #25: Google Hacks 3 - Combine Searches:

Google is the world's most popular search engine. So it helps to know a bit more about using it than the average person.

It is easy to go to www.google.co.za and type in words to search for. Google will then search for pages where all those words occur. Sometimes that is not good enough; instead we want to search for alternative words.

Last time we saw how we could search for "soil profile" "borehole log" (with quotes), finding about 7 450 pages that contain both of the phrases given in quotes.

What if these phrases are different descriptions for the same thing?  In that case we could put the word OR between the phrases, thus: "soil profile" OR "borehole log". This search finds about 1 930 000 results!  Note that the word OR must be in capitals, otherwise it is treated as just another search term. Similarly, we can search for borehole OR well.

AutoCAD News

There are a number of developments in the next few months, as follows:

Both InfraWorks (2020) and Civil 3D 2020 are Releasing

The most notable new feature for InfraWorks (2020) is the ability to save back edited data from InfraWorks to the Esri data stores. An early tester commented, “(this feature) delivers on the promise of connected BIM workflows.”

Among the new capabilities coming in Civil 3D 2020, we are most excited by design automation delivered through the introduction of Dynamo for Civil 3D. Dynamo for Civil 3D will allow customers to build scripts and routines that will process simple, repetitive, or complex tasks quickly and efficiently. “This is simply next level scripting…” –Wouter Bulens, Tuc Rail

Excel Tip #175 -- What Are Excel Macros?

Last time we gave some reasons why you should consider using Excel Macros: To speed up your work by automating frequently-repeated operations. It's also useful for spreadsheets that others can use without having to understand the complexities themselves.

But what are Excel Macros anyway?

Macros are computer programs, written in a computer language that Excel understands, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). The VBA used in Excel 2016 and earlier is virtually identical to that in stand-alone Visual Basic 6.0 (1998).  One day it may be updated to match the newer stand-alone Visual Basic .NET (pronounced "dot net").. VB.NET is a complete re-write of the language, and differs in many areas.

VBA looks a lot like a simple version of English, and is one of the easiest programming languages to learn.

In fact, to a large degree, you do not have to learn it at all. One of the wonderful things about Excel is the Macro Recorder. You switch it on, and perform the actions that you want to automate: Keystrokes, mouse clicks, ribbon selections, are all recorded in Excel VBA. From there you can simply re-run the same actions. In addition, you can then modify the code to extend its capabilities.  For example, you can record one action on a single cell, and then put it inside a loop to repeat 1000 (or any number) of times!

Next time, we'll record your first macro. Don't miss this life-changing experience!
