Could the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) kill your business?  Get clued-up and nip it in the bud.

We end with fruity words of wisdom from Computius.

Your Right Not to Vaccinate

Did your parents take away your basic human right to die of polio by getting you vaccinated as a child?  Not to mention your right to infect others with it, too...

That's no different to refusing vaccination against Covid-19 now.

Did you "do your own research" as some people recommend?

With respect, that is not “research”. Double-blind trials on a large number of people? Comparing large numbers of scientific papers from reputable journals, checking their sources?  Probably not...

Health professionals have sworn an oath to protect you. The anti-vaxx opinions you read on the internet are from people who are making money by exposing you to advertising on their click-baited websites. They are after publicity and income.  They don’t give a damn about your health.

If you look at the real scientific research, you will see that the vaccines we are getting are safe. They have been through the most stringent tests ever, and have passed. There is no mechanism whereby they can alter your DNA, and no evidence that they do.  There's no reason why anyone would want to do so anyway.

Vaccination has been in use for over a century.  It has virtually eliminated formerly deadly diseases like Polio, Smallpox, Tetanus, Hepatitis A & B, and Rubella.

Not being vaccinated is what is dangerous, both for you and everyone you meet. The people who are dying in hospital right now are the unvaccinated. We don’t want a valued customer like you amongst them.  Please vaccinate.

On-Line Business Tip #54 – Tired of WhatsApp?  Try Telegram!

WhatsApp, along with its owner, Facebook, had a six-hour outage on Monday night.  You thought it was your equipment at fault, at first, didn't you?  We did.

Are you tired of using a communications app that passes your details on to Facebook?  One that may be unreliable?  Or would you just like a free alternative, in case?

Telegram is that alternative: With WhatsApp down, Telegram experienced a record increase in user registration and activity. The platform gained over 70 million new subscribers in that one day. Despite the load, Telegram continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of users.

A big advantage of Telegram for group Admins is that you can delete spam and unwanted posts.  If you get a significant number of spammers or inappropriate posters, it's worth changing, just for this feature.  You can import your existing chats from WhatsApp and other platforms.

Get Telegram on your phone from an App or Play Store, or on computer from this link. Welcome to Telegram, the largest independent messaging platform.

Excel for Engineers and Scientists Online Live Course starts Thursday 21 October 2021

Microsoft Excel is (pardon the pun) an excellent engineering tool.  Not only does it have all basic mathematical functions, it has advanced statistical functions, matrix manipulation, charts, and much else.  Are you, as an engineer and scientist, using it to the full?  Are you aware of how much it can do?  Many of us are self-taught and have gaps in our knowledge.  Fill those gaps on the online Excel for Engineers training: two full days of personal attention in a small class.

Next Scheduled Course: Thursday 21 and Friday 22 October 2021 (two days, 08:00-17:00 CAT).
Venue: Live Online via Zoom.  65-page PDF manual is supplied, and 14 examples files.
Earl-Bird
Price if paid two weeks or more before the course (THIS Thursday, 7 October): Only R4,000 plus VAT per trainee.  Thereafter R4,497 plus VAT each.
Course Creator and Facilitator: Rick Raubenheimer B Sc (Eng) (Wits) (1975).

Run by Software Africa. More information on this web page.  For more information and to book, click here and send the resulting email.

Also... Excel for Engineers and Scientists Online Self-Paced Course starts Now...

Now, if you find the above live course expensive, or you cannot spare two full days away from work, we have an alternative.

The same course is available on-line as a self-paced course.  The same manual and examples.  The same trainer. No live support, however.  But done at your own pace at times that suit you.  Take half an hour a day and complete it in a month.  Spend an hour a day and finish it in two weeks.  Or dedicate two days –a weekend, perhaps?– and crack the whole course.

Take our self-paced online course in your own time and venue.  All the value at under a quarter of the price of the live course.  Backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Excel Tip #203 – Basic Coding 16: Looping the Loop – How to Repeat Code

In the last issue, we tested our macro that processes a list of telephone numbers into a uniform format.  We are now looking at improving the macro.  At the moment the macro fixes a single telephone number.  But even pressing a shortcut like Ctrl+Shift+P seventy times is onerous! Could we get the macro to run repeatedly until it gets to the bottom of the list? I’m glad you asked!

For this we need a Loop: The While ... Wend Loop will do.  The syntax is:

While condition
  [statements]
Wend

This loop executes a series of statements as long as a given condition is True. If the condition is False to start off with, the loop does not execute at all.

When the condition is no longer met, the loop will stop.  That's a good thing: We don't want a macro that runs forever!  We might want to use the computer for something else at some stage!

What condition should we use?  Think about that, and next time we will give a solution.

Finish Covid-19 Lockdown with a Timesaving New Skill!

You can use this time to learn simple Excel macros.  Do repetitive work in a flash, instead of repeating the same boring stuff manually.  Save hours not working late, and spend more time with your family...  The Software Africa Quick 'n Easy Turbo-Start Excel Macros course is now online.  The lockdown discount has ended, but it is still a bargain.
