Autodesk Tip ~ Online Business Tip ~ Excel Tip

Editorial

There is a Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times". After the events of the past weeks, we seem to being living in very interesting times, whilst being faced with complete inaction at government level. Perhaps business needs to make more noise about how this is affecting employment and sales.

"You're Good to Go"

...so we went!  Applying the above Standard Bank slogan, in the light of their appalling service and massive closure of branches, we have closed our account with Substandard Bank.  Please make all payments into our FNB account in future.

On-Line Business Tip #31: Google Hacks 9 -  "inurl:" & "intext:":

Google is the most popular search engine in the solar system. So it helps to know a bit more about using it than the average earthling.

When you go to www.google.co.za and type in something to search for, Google searches the whole page.  However you can refine this.

inurl: will search for the following text in the URL only.
intext: will search for the following text in the body text  only.
For example, say you want contacts for companies with a postal code = 2000 (Johannesburg).  Use:
inurl:contact intext:2000 site:za

90-day Subscription Renewal Reminder Added

Customers are reminded 90 days in advance to renew their subscription by Autodesk:

"In an effort to increase our subscription renewal rates, we recently began sending 90-day renewal reminder emails to customers in addition to our standard 45-, 30-, and 4-day reminders.

"Our goal is to give customers more advance notice that their maintenance plan will be expiring soon and to remind them of their renewal options. The renewal reminders are stopped once a subscription has been renewed.

"As previously announced, we have also added that customers can save 10% when they switch to a subscription with 3-year terms at renewal time*."

* Savings of 3-year subscriptions is compared to the applicable Autodesk suggested retail price for 3 consecutive, annual subscriptions. Autodesk partners are independent and free to set their own prices.

Excel Tip #180 – The Excel Visual Basic Editor's Menu II

Earlier, we looked inside the macro you recorded.  Then, last time we introduced the program we use to edit the macro. Let us now examine its main menu.

In Excel, press Alt+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.  You should see the following at the top of the window:

Last time we looked at the menus from "File" to "Format".  Let's now look at the remaining menus, with their main features:

  1. Debug: Here you can Compile your VBA Project (important to check your code).  While debugging, you can: Step Into code (F8), Step Over (Shift+F8), Step Out (Ctrl+Shift+F8), Run To Cursor (Ctrl+F8), Add or Edit a Watch point, set a Quick Watch (Shift+F9), Toggle Breakpoint (F9), Clear All Breakpoints (Ctrl+Shift+F9), Set Next Statement (Ctrl+F9), and Show Next Statement.
  2. Run: Run Sub/UserForm (F5) runs the subprogram or User Form.  Break (Ctrl+Break) and Reset affect running code. Design Mode is used for User Forms.
  3. Tools: "References" is used to extend the language by adding capabilities from other programs. "Additional Controls" can be added to a User Form. "Macros" opens the Macros window, as you can do from Excel. "VBAProject (or other name) Properties" lets you change the name of the Project, its description, and protect it with a password. "Digital Signature" lets you secure the project with a digital certificate.
  4. Add-Ins: The only item, "Add-In Manager" lets you add, remove, and control the behaviour of add-ins, if there are any.
  5. Window: This is the standard old-style Window menu, allowing you to rearrange open code windows (Split, Tile Horizontally, Tile Vertically, Cascade, Arrange Icons) and open any Code Window in any open file.
  6. Help: Just above the menu, you can type terms to search for. In the menu you can go to Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications Help (F1),  MSDN on the Web, or get "About Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications" (Version number, date, and system information).

Next time we'll start looking at the Visual Basic Editor's toolbars.

Computius Say:

Computer Terms: "Alpha" version software is in its first stage of testing.  Alpha is Latin for "doesn't work".
