Autodesk Tip ~ QuickBooks Tip ~ Online Business Tip ~ Excel Tip
Spring has come and gone. Lockdowns have come and gone and came again and are apparently still coming. One has to wonder sometimes whether anyone knows where they're going! Spring not only brought new blossoms but also a strengthening of the Rand against the US Dollar. As a result we are pleased to tell you that we have decreased Autodesk prices effective 15 October 2020. Read Below for more details.
The "Microsoft Excel for Engineers and Scientists" online training provided by Software Africa in collaboration with CPD Africa [Continuous Professional Developments (Pty) Ltd], held on Thursday and Friday 17–18 September, was a great success. The feedback was very positive from the participating Scientists, Engineers, Engineering Technologists and Technicians. To take part in future such webinars, click to find out more here.

Last issue we started investigating alternatives for on-line schools, starting with Udemy.
A while ago we were approached by a new school, TabletWise. They claim to have "a unified suite of online teaching software We bring together all the pieces that are required to sell online learning content, accept payments, and market your business."
An advantage of this platform is that they advertise for their schools. They also offer coaching to help with your marketing.
TabletWise gave great personal attention for a new school, did imports and helped with formatting. Lesson setup was somewhat restrictive (for example, videos have to go at the top of a lesson, above any text, and they play automatically when the lesson is opened).
They turned out to be less than transparent when it came to sales. On their page linked above, they say that sellers get "97% revenue share on marketplace sales". Dig deeper and you find, on their help center, "For all sellers, the marketplace payout rate is 60% revenue share of all catalog sales." They don't (or didn't in July) mention what "catalog sales" actually are, nor the very important point that they are in fact heavily discounting courses without the owner’s permission. While this might be an omission in good faith, on the face of it the lack of this vital information looks duplicitous. I expected at least a full explanation of "catalog sales" and the option for a teacher to opt out.
Add to that the fact that they use your course’s sales page to advertise courses from other teachers, It appears that TablelWise has adopted the worst practices of Udemy, while doing its best to give the opposite impression.
As a result of the above, we did not consider them trustworthy, and closed our account with TabletWise.
Many of your staff are working from home at present. Could your company make this an opportunity instead of a drawback?
Employees are more valuable when they know Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access (the database), and automation using Visual Basic macros. We can train them online in person via the internet at times that suit your schedule.
At Software Africa we have a wealth of training material, tested and honed in in-person classes. Levels range from beginners through to programming. Now we train online, live via Zoom at times to suit you. It is actually better that way! The trainee can see the trainer's screen up close, instead of peering from the back of a room. The trainee can share their screen instead of the trainer having to wander around to look.

As in the last issue, we have a long list of telephone numbers, which we want to put in a uniform format. We recorded a macro to convert the phone number to the desired format, and then move one cell down. Unfortunately what Excel recorded was just this line of code:
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "071 834 7583"
Excel was lazy! It just records the result you entered at the end, not the editing process you went through.
We will now start on the skills you need to do to change this macro to make it do what we want.
Our macro is going to have to do the following:
We will now dive into some theory. To achieve point 2 ("Store it somewhere temporarily"), we need to learn about variables. We will do this in the next edition.
You can use this time to learn simple Excel macros. Do repetitive work in a flash, instead of repeating the same boring stuff manually. Save hours not working late, and spend more time with your family... The Software Africa Quick 'n Easy Turbo-Start Excel Macros course is now online. To help you during lockdown, for a limited time you can get it at a 75%+discount!
From radio interview, sounded like Julius going today to Senegal. We hope one-way ticket.
All the Best from the team!
